*hello. friends.*

hello, out there.
it's been ages since i've been here.
i had a notion yesterday that it is time for me to return to the kelly loves whales blog. high-time indeed.
*
so.

*
hello again.
*
i think that the format of this blog may change a bit, more writing, more whales. more infusion of where i've been on my yogic journey.
*
when i began this blog three years ago (three years ago!), my intentions were to begin to paint again. my intentions have shifted, expanded. i want this to be a space where i can create meaningful work (written, filmed, drawn, painted, moved, whatevered) about the issues that move me.
*
thanks for joining me.
BLESSINGS.

news updates: site makeover

darlings,
i have been working on a complete site redesign {and must say i'm pleasantly surprised with the html and css skills i've picked up over the past two years of blogging} and plan to launch the first week of september.

the new site will feature more tutorials, more lifestyle & fashion posts, more yoga {i'd like to integrate my two blogs, but i'll leave that open to change}, interviews, more emerging artists, more of everything, basically!
also...
the new site will include the opportunity for sponsorship and i would like to give my current readers this information now in case you or someone you know might be interested in sponsoring the new site. there are a whole range of options, from $35 up, and the first month will be at a discounted rate.
if you are interested in learning more, do email me at kelly {at} kellyloveswhales {dot} com.

giveaway contest!

Darlings, I'm just so excited to share with you the latest creative bud that's beginning to bloooooom in my world. If you have been following my hints at all, maybe you've guessed it: I'm opening a new shop called Sunrose Studio.

Sunrose Studio will feature my fine art photography and digital collage prints as well as a rotating selection of original paintings. As always, I strive for my pieces to be affordable enough for you to become collectors of the work I create with LOVE.

Sunrose Studio will launch next week. . . stay tuned!

On to the contest/giveaway: I will be giving away one 8 by 10-inch and two 5 by 7-inch fine art prints to three luckies selected at random. To enter, leave a comment with your favorite photo featured below. This contest is open until Saturday, July 4, 2009 at 3pm Pacific Daylight Time. Good luck!

{the back-story: when I opened my kelly LOVES whales shoppe in November of 2007, I just went for it {as they say} without a lot of planning or forethought. While I'm glad I did this {it certainly helped get me started and let me surrender various fears about putting my art out for all the world to see}, I am now at a place where I have a vision for my creative endeavors in the long-term. kelly LOVES whales will continue to grow and thrive, though I will be using it for primarily paper goods & textiles-- journals, notecards, sweet lil' prints, tees and the such, whereas sunrose studio will be the place where I showcase my photography, digital collage, and original paintings. I cannot wait to welcome you to Sunrose Studio and the new kelly LOVES whales shop.}

inspiration tuesday.

right now, these things inspire me:
my garden. {more garden-y photos here.}
spending the evenings weeding and watering. {rather than t.v.-ing.}
my last few pages of breaking dawn. {what will i read after twilight-ing?}
designing & sewing a dress to wear to a weekend wedding.
my new project. {hints, there might be a new shopping destination for photos like the one featured in this post. stay tuned for a . . . giveaway.}
ferny.
{i love when one's own life is the source of richest inspiration.}

la la la monday.

darlings,
thank you so so much for the sweet birthday wishes. it was as de-lish a day as ever {i ate my weight in Indian food, chocolate cake + macaroons}. it's definitely official, i am thirty-one. on with the show!

this weekend i...

*made major strides on a secret new project that will launch in the next week {more to be revealed soon, but hints may come up in my tweets}.

*organized our multi-media bureau as i cleaned the house from top to bottom {i love to embark on organizational projects. it pleases me to no end. now, i just need to keep it organized!}.

*had two magical cocktails at Barrio. {grapefruit soda + tequila + lime + salt = holy mother of yum}.

* enjoyed the sweet, colorful costumes for the gay pride events in our sister neighborhood.
added a few new seeds and starts to my urban garden retreat. {jasmine, another lavender, more pink poppies + something that will attract the hummingbirds. i did unwittingly run errands with dirt smeared on my cheeks, but no matter.}

how about you?
peace. & LOVE. always.

happy happy friday.

dears, you know i love an experiment, right? well... i do. and lately, i have been experimenting a lot with digital collage. i'm smitten. i made these two this week using those copyright-free images & good ol' photoshopery. what risks have you taken lately? what experiments have you undertaken?
this weekend could be the perfect time!

{the story of the ghost-- this one has a bunch of Phish sheet music in it, too. you know i love that.}

sunshine & roses.

darlings,
it has been a bit quiet here on the blog, hasn't it? sorry! there have been so many inspiring, fun and exciting activities calling my name away from the computer. {i'm still working on finding a good balance of computer-studio-work-play time, but who isn't?} anyways, i *do* have some news, beautiful news to my ears {at least}. i submitted a painting for consideration in a group show... and I GOT IN!!
this thrilled me to no end! it has taken a lot of patience to get to where i am right now, and work {daily work that i love & wouldn't trade, mind you} developing my skills as a painter, artist & live-in-the-present-er. it feels like things are moving so fast right now in general, like a lot of stagnation is finally being freed up. perhaps this is winter turning into spring.

big sigh of happiness.

{this, by the way, is the painting i submitted to the show.}
so, let's celebrate!
peace. & LOVE.
always.

Recession Chic! One year strong.

Pacific Sun Column

Darlings,

I had the wonderful honor of being interviewed by the fabulous Brenda Kinsel of Pacific Sun on staying chic through the recession. She spoke with my two sweet sisters and me about creative ways to stay chic on a budget. The issue in which Brenda's column appears hit the newsstands yesterday. I think this means I'm famous! (I said "I think," so feel free to laugh heartily or disagree completely.) Brenda and I talked about my year of no-new clothes, which concludes on July 26th-- today!! Although I do need a few things-- some new tees and pants for yoga--, I'm planning to keep my current habit of no-new going. It feels right. We celebrated my year of no-new by picking up a discarded "FREE" bookcase from the side of the road (in new condition) for my studio on our way home from the big Saturday morning walk this morning. I took that a sign that we are on the right track!

To be honest with you, I hadn't reflected much on my year of no-new clothes, so my interview with Brenda came at the perfect time. For fun, I'll share the initial round of written questions Brenda emailed me before we spoke in person as well as my favorite get-ups from my year of no-new.

This is the dress that started it all:
top down

When did you make this pact?* Why? {*Note: Brenda contacted me with the understanding that my sisters and I had taken a pact of no-new clothes for a year.}

Perhaps my sisters have a pact, but I haven't heard about it. I started my year of no-new clothes last July when I finished the third day of the Washington Bar Exam and celebrated with a trip to the Gap to buy a new t-shirt dress for myself. I wear the dress all of the time, but it marked the end of an era for me: consumption as a reward for working hard. Since we moved to back to the Northwest from Colorado, my husband and I set a real intention to live the lives we always wanted to live. For us, this means making space for what matters: getting around town by walking or biking; eating organic and locally grown foods (we're actually experimenting in veganism this month); spending money on things and experiences we'll truly enjoy; spending time doing what we love. Not buying new clothes seemed like a natural extension of the way we lived the rest of our lives and felt really authentic to me. We bought our first house a year ago, so I am constantly looking for ways to maximize the utility of each dollar, and I know this experiment has made a difference. I didn't originally intend to set the goal of no-new for a year, but it happened that around 4 months, I noticed that I no longer even wanted to shop for new clothes. That's when I thought I'd try for a whole year.

Where are you "shopping" if you aren't shopping for new things?

For most of the year, I shopped by going through boxes of my own clothes and actually wearing them. I looked at it as a creative exercise as well as a way to purge the items that have no place in my wardrobe. This spring and summer, I have branched out to Goodwill and Value Village, but I have a little game I play where I only let myself look at what is half-price that day.

I hear you are creating more individualist outfits by sewing, etc. How or where are you getting your inspiration?

I have been really honing my aesthetic as an artist this year, and I find that "my style" naturally permeates all aspects of my life: home decor, food, and (of course) fashion. That being said, I find inspiration everywhere and carry a camera or sketchbook with me to capture it for later. Before I started the year of no-new clothes, I joined an online community called wardrobe_remix (started by Tricia Royal-- a SF designer) where members post daily outfits. I get a lot of inspiration there. Also, I'm constantly consulting fashion, craft and diy blogs and podcasts. I've signed up for an apparel design class this fall to see how far I can take this.
seventy-six/ 365. friday. june. 20. 2008.

Is it easy to do?

I'm nearing the end of the year, and I can honestly say it was not hard. I thought it would be hard, but by actually thinking about what I can do with what I already have, make or buy for $1.50 and how that money could be spent more meaningfully, it was a piece of cake.

into it all.

What advice would you have for others?

Like all things, take it one day at a time. If you shop when stressed, think about the stressors associated with most shopping experiences and then brainstorm ways to mellow out in a truly relaxing way. Maybe even start small by limiting yourself to paying for new clothes in cash and giving yourself a monthly clothes allowance.

Is this a commitment based on politics, spirituality, personal leanings, etc.?

For me, all of my choices lead back to my well of beliefs, and this one is no different. I'm not buying into the whole idea that I need to run myself into the ground working a job I can't stand to pay off things I bought on credit so long ago they no longer fit my body or my lifestyle.

Brenda is a fascinating gal. She is a fashion and image consultant, who writes books, columns and guides on style in addition to assisting her private clients. Does that sound like a dream job or what?! Brenda has a new book in stores now called Brenda Kinsel's Fashion Makeover: 30 Days to Diva Style! Check it out.

Happy weekend, darlings!

the haps.

dear-hearts, it's been a bit since i've written more than just a few words about what is new in the studio here at chateau le shyla, so i thought i'd pull back the curtains for a few moments and let you have a peek.

one of my great loves.

in the last few weeks, i have been quite busy with a project for my work-work. ever since i finished the pieces for my show, i've been putting more energy into the work that is paying the bills these days. the project is on its last leg, and i'll probably finish up in june. until then, i'm still drawing and painting, just not with the same level of intensity. i have been spending a lot of time with my cameras lately, both the nice one and the mean one. (mean guy is good for shots that i'd prefer to be completely out-of-focus and grainy.)

blossoms.

and i'm adding more yoga classes to my schedule (tuesday early mornings and tuesday afternoon kids yoga). the thursday night class has become quite popular, and the students are all just rays of light, i tell you!! it is a dream-class for me, because i get to teach a whole-yoga class, from the sutras to pranayama to chanting and (of course) asana at a price that makes the class accessible (it's $6.50, with tax--i'm not even joking). when i became a yoga teacher, this is the class i dreamed of teaching. who can ask for more than that?!

this is summer.

beyond that, i'm planning to do a few new prints from the pieces i created for the show (like these, this and this) as well as some cards. i love cards and have wanted to do a run of them for awhile.
and, here is the real clincher: i have about a month and a half to come up with the best way to ring in my third decade.

square. that's what i am.

i'm resolving to look less serious in my thirties. what do you think?

a lighter note.

dears,
do you know what you are wearing to the opening of "Sex & the City: THE MOVIE?" me either, but this sounds like a great polyvore assignment. who's with me?

the backstory for those of you not inside my brain:

and if that's not enough, click on over to Design for Mankind for another genius installment of Double Take, in which Kylie re-creates Carrie's bachelorette boudoir for the masses. Check it. This is almost too much fabulousness for one day!!

back to the assignment: if you are in, let me know via email: kellyloveswhales {at} gmail {dot} com with a link to your idea and we'll have a premier fashion preview here on the blog!

Doing the happy dance.

Dears, I have fantastic news: my new scanner is on its way to the house. as. we. speak. seriously.

Monday, March 10, 2008

Happy-ness is a Monday.

Isn't it? Here is a fun piece-- this is the back-drop I started late last week. I promise it will look so. different. the next time you see it, so I for one am just enjoying this bit of crazy-whimsy while it's here.

Did anyone do anything fun this weekend? I watched Stardust & Martian Child (both were wonderful), taught yoga to a fabulous group on Saturday, had yummy homemade pizza at our friends' house and watched Shyla swim in the lake. Goodness, all around.

It's you I'm talking to.

Well, hello there. Thanks for dropping by today. We are in total, crazy creation-mode here, and I cannot wait to show you what has been happening. First, let's talk about what's happening outside: there are crocuses, hyacinth, daffodils and irises blooming; there are rhododenrons budding; and the sun is like a lemon of good hope. Now, for what's happening inside: as you know, I needed a break from convention and it has been marvelous. I'm working on a new series that is making me so happy. Okay, I'll show you a little bit from it, but be prepared to be completely surprised when you see this in its finished incarnation, because there are countless layers involved. LOVE that.

Moving on to technology. We got a new external hard-drive. The old one was 250gigs (I think), and we filled him up to the brim. New guy, let's call him Leonard, holds a terrabyte, so of course we are already talking about what new music we simply. must. have. right. now. And when I write "we," I'm talking about the DJ of the house only... my mister. He does a great job of keeping everythig fresh so I have new sounds to listen to while painting or doing whatever it is I happen to be doing at the moment. Meanwhile, I'm still plotting my purchase of a new scanner. If I sell two bigger pieces by the end of the month, I will buy a new scanner. Got it?

Good.

The studio is in major disarray even though I just cleaned and organized it-- this means I'm working. It's all good. At least BK let's me have my controlled messes in my studio, right?
Oh, and another thing. Does anyone know what's happening astrologically right now? Things seem... different. Dontcha think?

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Googly-eyes.

Hello, dears. Happy TUESDAY! I just wrapped up teaching a lovely yoga class and am back to work in ye olde studio. I spent a few hours yesterday photographing a bunch of finished pieces, and vow to list at least one new piece in the shoppe everyday until they are all up there. Like spring cleaning! Here's a sneak peek at one of the brand-new ones, it's called Muladhara.

I would recommend this piece if you are looking for something to bring security and a real sense of being here, being present. Also, it is wonderful for those looking to deepen their connection with the body, either the physical body or the earth. Have I mentioned that all of these pieces are created in the studio I use for meditation and yoga as well? So, not only did I create this piece with the intention of creating a stablizer for the root chakra (muladhara), it also lived amidst the good vibes created by the meditation and yoga. My gift to you! Here's a long shot of her all framed up.

In other news, I want to direct your attention to some sassy new shoppes & blogs I have been digging recently:

Studio Mela-- totally wonderful and sweet artwork by a gal named Shelli from the Twin Cities- hollla! Read her blog here, and please do visit her shoppe here.

A cup of Jo--all I can say is: where the hell have I been? This lady (Joanna Goddard) is totally cool. Reading this makes me feel like I know famous people for some reason.

MKendall--totally dreamy photography. Seriously. Amazing. This gal describes herself as a 25 year old painter turned photographer. Check her shoppe here & her flickr pix here.

I think I might have happened upon MKendall via Under the Sugar. She makes some loverly photographs and screenprints. Here is her etsy shoppe.

So, there you have the newest stars in my eyes.

PEACE.

Weekend wonderfulness.

It was so BEAUTY-full here this weekend. And I did all of the things I love: taught yoga, practiced yoga, spent quality time with my mister, danced, painted, collaged, watched movies, spent quality time with a girl-friend (who made me yummy tea and homemade Indian goodies), walked my pooch. Good stuff. Here are some of the highlights.

Weekends are for...

Oh my goodness. The SUN shone on Sunday and it was amazing. Other than that, here is my weekend round-up.

1. After reading about it on this girl's blog, I watched The Jane Austen Book Club and LOVED it. I think I married a real life version of Grigg, except that he did not watch the movie with me because he was working on filing a brief.

2. I also watched Donnie Darko for the first time ever. Seriously, I loved that movie, or any other movie that manages to squeeze in Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time.

3. The house is gloriously clean. (We clean every week, but it looks even cleaner with the SUN shining through the windows.)

4. New work. New artwork, I mean. This is the best kind of work, in my opinion.

5. You know how I love podcasts, right? Well, I listened to some great podcasts whilst cleaning the castle yesterday. On Theatre of the Mind, I listened to interviews about The Mayan Code and Mayan Calendar; on Yoga Peeps, I listened to a wonderful interview with down-to earth yogi Tilak Pyle-- cannot wait to learn more about that guy; on CraftCast, I listened to Alison interview a cool chic named Melissa Manley about going back to school for her MFA. Good stuff.
