inspiration tuesday. mama style. remix.
i would like, however, to thrift a few pieces for the capsule wardrobe-- maybe 2 skirts and 2 pants. i also just realized i have no tops in primary colors, so i'd like to add tops in red and blue. here are a few items similar to those i'll be looking for. once i have this all dialed in, i'll begin sharing the get-ups with you. until then, i'll be scampering around in the same old jeans and tee-shirt i've been wearing for the past 9 weeks. (just kidding... sort of.)
J Crew boatneck top, $33
Striped top, $40
Lark Wolff by Steven Alan circular skirt, $15
Print skirt, $37
GAP vintage style jeans, $70

Pounced! Great Patterns.
Great Patterns sells just that: great patterns. Gorgeous, vintage patterns perfect for summer sewing. {I love to bring my sewing machine into whatever room my husband and I are hanging out in at night and sew away while listening to music.} The patterns offered by Great Patterns have ignited the sewing spark, and I think I'll sew a dress this weekend.
{ from left: vintage 1960s Size 14(--includes a bathing suit!), vintage 1970s size 10 caftans, vintage 1960s Mod Pleated tent dress, vintage 1970s mock-wrap dress. }

happy friday.

la la la.
i'm still adhering to my principles on buying clothes: reusing my own over buying, buying used & vintage over new, and only buying small label, local, sustainable new stuff.
we have a fancy-fun, dress-up benefit gala coming up, and i'm happy to report that i found something black-tie dressy & vintage, while staying true to my style.
{also, happily using up the spectra film, as you can see.}
love to you all.

dreams.

would this look fun as a scarf? or draped over the couch?
i'm thinking of getting it printed.

i made this in a somewhat unusual way: i scanned my head, then i edited the image, flipped it around and multiplied it. is that gross? tell me the truth darlings. honestly, if i thought bk would let me scan his head, i would have used someone else's.

pounced! LaTouchables.
In her own words:
"I come from a long line of women who made everything by hand--their clothes, the blankets and rugs in their homes, the food they ate, including butter, cheese, bread...my mom milked cows, my grandmother rendered lard, my great-grandmother hand-stitched her garments during the great depression, and I studied painting in art school."
Dawn's etsy shop features elegant sewn goods. i am enamored with Dawn's work, especially the Poet's Bag {photographed below}.

election craft for you!
darlings. for the most part, this blog is not political. if you are a regular reader {or know me from my life outside of this blog}, however, you probably already know that i am voting for barack obama in this november's election. this weekend, i decided to make a few low-tech buttons for my family & i to wear to promote this most awesome candidate, and i thought it would be fun to share the buttons with all of my internet friends too. you can download the graphics for these buttons by clicking here, here, or here, and you can watch a super dorky video of me demonstrating how to make this craft here.

working it all year long. the KALEIDOSCOPE life preserver jacket.
KNOW thyself! {keeping a journal of one's daily outfits helps determine whether that new wool suit is really necessary. i keep mine on wardrobe_remix.}
KNOW thy wardrobe! {how will you wear the new piece? how many outfits can you brainstorm before taking the plunge? i think 5 is the minimum for my comfort level.}
here's what i know about myself: i LOVE color. i never feel right in khaki pants or light-colored chinos. i won't wear pants that feel too tight. i can't work in tops that are too big. i don't like the way i look when brown is the focal point of my look.
here's what i know about my wardrobe: i have lots of photos of its components, which makes for easy outfit planning. i also have a closet where half of the real estate is holding suits i don't wear anymore. {i.e., i need to sell some suits on ebay before i can buy much more.}
here's what i mean, this is how you can rock the KALEIDOSCOPE life preserver jacket by Ruffeo Hearts Lil' Snotty all year long. {click on the photo to view large.}

KALEIDOSCOPE jacket, by Ruffeo hearts Lil' Snotty.
Fuchsia boots, by Hunter.
Marigold skirt, by Dolce & Gabana. {look for something similar at aa or f21.}
Turtleneck dress, by American Apparel.
Oxfords, by Aerosoles.
Ruffeo Hearts Lil' Snotty has been one of my favorite Etsy shops for awhile. They create the most rockin-est pieces fit for a colorphile like myself. These kids have it going on: they were finalists in the Fred Flare Next Big Thing she-bang this year. How rad is that?! Check 'em out right here.

the tie-up pants of perfection.
After a few days of craziness, I am back! My baby-dog is healing quickly (her little ear was in quite the state of distress), and I'm coming down from the trauma-high I acquired from the pit bull ambush. I'm so excited to share my thoughts on making the tie-up pants from Gaia Conceptions a year-round part of the wardrobe.
I mentioned in my interview about the year of no-new that I need new yoga pants. Yoga pants are tough to thrift, because people (I'm included in this generalization of "people") tend to find a good pair and wear them until they are literally falling apart at the seams (this holds true for pajamas, too, and I just purchased my first new pair in eight years after the old ones literally fell off of my body...is that too much information?). Also, I'm a little squeamish about buying used body-wear. Call me old fashioned, but it's hard to focus my mind when I'm thinking about whether the last owner of a pair of pants kept the kind of hygiene I like and whether I had washed the pants sufficiently enough to eradicate any traces of errant sweat or (eek!) other bodily fluids that might have stowed away within the fabrics. Alright, that last sentence might have been pushing it, but you catch my drift. I was lucky enough to have thrifted a pair of never-been-worn yoga pants from 24hourfitness (tags still on) via Goodwill. However, I need a new pair still. I'm buying a pair of the tie-up pants from Gaia Conceptions.
The goodies from Gaia Conceptions are handmade by a sweet gal named Andrea using certified organic and eco-friendly fabrics. These pants are local, organic cotton. Andrea also dyes the fabric by hand using fiber reactive low impact dyes. You know I love that.
As much as it is important for me to have super awesome pants for the yoga classes I teach and for my own yoga practice, I need the pants to work into the rest of my wardrobe. For me, walking around in yoga pants all day can push me into the land of the shlumpadinka (I cannot believe that I just quoted Oprah Winfrey); you know, pants that were never meant to see the outside of a gym paired with some ratty old tee from a road-race I ran ten years ago and some equally aged sneakers...not a pretty picture on the one hand, and it is harder for me to actually get things done if I look like I'm on my way to veg out on the couch. This is why the tie-up pants are so swell: the tie-up design gives them that chic lift. Here is my plan for integrating them into my life sans shlump. or dink.

{boots & scarf, by Urban Outfitters; vest, by American Apparel.}

wardrobe notes: remixing the batwing tunic.
the batwing tunic created by Liza Rietz is such a versatile piece. here are a few ways i would wear this style. (click on the image to see it larger.) with a piece like this, you can change the look so much by just switching it up between tucking the tunic in or tucking it out.

{batwing tunic, by Liza Rietz.}
{turquoise skirt, by Rowena Sartin.}
{mustard skirt, by TopShop.}
{skinny pants & high-waisted skinny pants, by American Apparel.}
{maxi-skirt, by 9west.}

for fall. fresh finds.
darlings, now that my year of no-new clothes has ended, i'm due for a few, well-chosen additions to the wardrobe. however, the year of no-new instilled in me a few new values regarding my consumption: connection to the maker & deliberation with respect to how the piece fits into my existing wardrobe. i care about the origin of my clothes as well as the ultimate destination of these clothes: too many times, i've thoughtlessly purchased some random piece from a big chain store only to donate the same spendy piece to goodwill a year later. well dear-hearts, those days are over.
my new requirements for new clothing are as follows: 1. it absolutely MUST work with my lifestyle and my vision for the wardrobe; 2. it should be hand-made, homemade or small shop-made, ideally with organic or sustainable materials.
etsy is an amazing place to find well-made, well-designed pieces for the modern wardrobe. here are my must-haves for fall made by independent designers. i've decided to highlight a few of my favorites for fall from etsy today as a group. in the coming weeks, i'll show you how each one of these pieces could make it through an entire of year of no-new simply by remixing them into new looks with pieces i already have. enjoy these and keep your eyes open for more-detailed features of each of these pieces and more!
