telecon marathon: day 3.

dears, i'm so sorry for my absence. it hasn't been all "soap-operas & bon-bons" around here, i must report. my desk job has had me chained to the phone since friday morning. and it's not the kind of call where i can tune out without hearing "let's hear what kelly has to say," every five minutes.
so, after 8 hours of that everyday, i've been teaching in the evenings. here's a peek at me as a career girl.

silk + sun.

AND, i finally ordered CS 3.3 {design software}! illustrator is on it's way! dreamweaver is on its way! yipeeee!

illo warm-ups.

I promise to write more later when I have a break.

larger than light.

dears, i'm so happy to be sharing these two new pieces with you! my dad has really taken to my new drawings, and he asked me to create a few larger drawings in a similar style for the den at my parents' house. these are the first two in the series: communication and beyond light. this project reminded of a little note i should make to all of you reading this: if you see something you like or liked that sold already, please do not hesitate to contact me about creating something similar to your liking. satisfaction is guaranteed, dear-hearts!!

communication. bare + framed.

draw-ing.

darlings, on these days when i teach yoga before the rooster crows (six-thirty in the morning), i tend to feel a bit confused about what day it is, what time it is, where i'm supposed to be and the such. luckily, there is very little time for me to really wallow in the confusion, since i'm teaching two more classes today, mailing art from the post office and working my heart out. here is another new drawing. it's going into the shop tomorrow! UPDATE: it's in the shop, for sale. You can buy it right here.

breathe, move, tear, sketch. a habit.

Sketches.

inspiration.

drawings done by the light of the scanner.

Here is what is in my brain right now.

As I have mentioned in the past, I LOVE podcasts. One of my favorite shows is CraftCast with Allison Lee. She has such a wonderful way with her guests, and really gets to the heart of the creative process with people from a broad array of creative endeavors. She interviewed her son Erich Bergen (he's an actor in the show Jersey Boys) on the show a few weeks back, and he talked about Twyla Tharp's wonderful book, The Creative Habit. Essentially, TCH reminds readers that channeling divine inspiration is only possible when you lay all of the ground-work. Part of the ground-work is the daily routine. Tharp's daily routine consists of starting each day with two hours of training at the gym. Without the routine, the magic can't happen-- and this is true for whatever you do in life. Without a daily practice, the soul of the work is just not there. Sure, you can still play the notes in a piece of music or make your sales pitch or whatever, but the spark-- that bit that makes what you do your life's purpose rather than just a job or a hobby or what-evs-- won't be there with you. For me, if I don't get my practice in, everything suffers. In recent weeks, I have written about how crazy busy I've been for the last month with one of my gigs and how that has affected me creatively. Last Tuesday, I recommitted myself to my creative habit, and I'll share it with you now. This is literally what it takes.

Movement first thing in the morning-- a walk everyday, strength training 2-3 times a week.
Tea.
Meditation followed by a bit of yoga.
Journal-work. (I write 10 things that inspire me right now or tear 10 images from magazines that express something that grabs me.)
Another bit of movement around 3-- a run or bike ride followed by yoga or just yoga.

What are your creative habits?

floating through the universe.

thursday is one of my favorite days of the week. donnerstag in german. it's a nice day to get some thinking done. this week, and last, have been filled with a lot of busy work. i have not even spent an hour *in* the studio. the drawing and painting i have done have been in the evening, sitting on the couch with my husband-- listening to music, talking about our days, and perhaps half-watching television (more on that later). the busy-ness is good, because it means food for the table. the busy-ness reminds me that i simply must practice yoga and meditate in order to stay grounded. the coffee-crazy-computer lifestyle makes me incapable of thinking on thought all the way through. so there you have it.

although the time has not been quite right for much painting, i am having a little love-affair with my camera right now. we are having a ball exploring all of the nooks and crannies of the century house. i am still in awe of this camera, and i love chasing the light around the house and hood.under.
I like looking at the world with new eyes, as though the lens of the camera were attached to my head. ... which brings me to the whole television-watching thing. You know I love nova, right? In my opinion, the only shows really worth watching are on pbs-- nova, nature, rick steves, austin city limits--but that is sort of beside the point. Tuesday night, I had a chance to sit down with my sketch book while watching nova. Holy awesome. The show was about the trip to one of Saturn's moons, Titan, by two spacecraft named Cassini & Huygens. Goodness sakes was it enchanting. I created a series of sketches based on the trip that are really still in the R&D phase, but I'll share a tid-bit or two with you now with the promise of more to come. I love space.
This drawing is called Huygens. I drew it in pencil and colored it digitally. (This is a new experiment for me, what do you think?)
Huygens was the spacecraft that launched from his mothership Cassini and actually landed (with a thud) on Titan's surface and recorded live while Cassini (who was meanwhile orbiting Saturn) transmitted the footage back to earth. Cassini stayed in orbit long after Huygens' light dimmed, sending back amazing footage of Saturn's rings and Jupiter. I'm mesmerized.
On a side note, the name Cassini reminds me of the phish song Carini, which has nothing to do with space (necessarily), but I thought you might like to know how my brain works through these things.
