Suzan has been crafting or making things her whole life. She emailed me the story about how she acquired her first sewing machine, and I simply MUST share it with you:
By the mid 70’s my father had retired and we settled in Maryland’s suburbia. He got a job demolishing a house and found a treasure inside. What he brought home was to shape my artistic leanings in a very big way: it was a turn of the century Singer sewing machine! Black with gold gilt, it was wonderfully portable and best of all, it worked perfectly! Now in high school, I taught myself to sew clothes of all types, jackets, shirts, skirts and dresses. I made my first wall hanging, orange canvas fabric adorned with felt pockets to store my important stuff! I was hooked!
I would certainly call that an auspicious encounter with a Singer, wouldn't you? Here are a few of my favorites from her shop.

ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous. I've increasingly thought that textiles really don't get enough notice as artwork in and of themselves and this kind of work really draws attention to that.
