la la la monday

this weekend, i...
walked in the hot sun with my family,
napped in the afternoon with oona,
experimented with new ways to cook tempeh & shared it with some friends,
&
enjoyed an amazing carrot cupcake from petit provence (oh my gosh!).
how about you?

i didn't take any photos of our weekend hijinks, so here are a few of boo-boo's bedroom.

first floor.

it occured to me that i've posted very little about our new place in portland. this is probably due mostly to my new 24/7 gig mothering oona-bear, but could also be related to it being a temporary place to rest our heads. we are renting this house and will only be here a year (if all goes as planned). nonetheless, i've been feathering the nest and think it's high time to share some photos. here is a peek into our world.

moving letters all around.

i love to rearrange the view inside of our house. while i was cleaning the house before our trip to st. louis, i simultaneously gave the art-arrangements in our house a makeover so that when we returned from the lou, it would be like a whole new house {and a magically clean one at that!}. here are a few shots of the new-ness.

white winter.

preparing the holiday tree

hello, darlings.
the pacific northwest has a reputation for being the epicenter of grey. the wonderful thing about being blanketed by grey skies is it allows one to really and truly become a connoisseur of grey-- to see all of the subtle differences in they sky as various cloud poufs roll through or stay for a spell. the deep dark greys that bring wind are dramatic and wild. the white grey that falls to earth in a shimmering mist is vital to the green foliage (and my skincare regimen). we have entered the time of year i like to refer to as "drippy." the big, fat drops of rain that plop in december are sweet. they are visible as i begin to dress the house for the winter holidays. the outdoors have inspired the holiday decor this year and include a mix of wood, crystal, flowers, re-used paper, pine cones and the such. you know i'll share more photos once we have all of the decorations in place.
happy tuesday. xo

just because...

i finished up the term this morning, darlings. my portfolio review went swimmingly. i earned an "a" in drawing. on the flip side, i may have failed my apparel design class. long boring story, i thought i had another week to finish the final project. no biggie, though. {people who knew me in law school, can you believe i just wrote that much less think it?!} i learned how to sew... REALLY sew... and that was my intention.

now, just for the fun of it, i'll post a few photos of shoes i wear on occasion and other things i happen to enjoy looking at in my newly acquired bit of free time.

and i'm off to decorate for the holidays!
peace. & LOVE.

thirty years ago today...

81/365. 3-0 is a magic number.
my mama was mowing the lawn. nine months pregnant with child. a few hours later, this little whale-lover boogied on into the world.

i'm so blessed to have all of you in my life. thank you for making the first thirty years so FABULOUS. life just gets better with each year. let's all have a good laugh at my crazy hair-cuts over the years!! xoxox

i'm going to enjoy the sun today, hit the beach, eat white cake with white frosting, and chill with my family. love. and peace. to you!

floating through the universe.

thursday is one of my favorite days of the week. donnerstag in german. it's a nice day to get some thinking done. this week, and last, have been filled with a lot of busy work. i have not even spent an hour *in* the studio. the drawing and painting i have done have been in the evening, sitting on the couch with my husband-- listening to music, talking about our days, and perhaps half-watching television (more on that later). the busy-ness is good, because it means food for the table. the busy-ness reminds me that i simply must practice yoga and meditate in order to stay grounded. the coffee-crazy-computer lifestyle makes me incapable of thinking on thought all the way through. so there you have it.

although the time has not been quite right for much painting, i am having a little love-affair with my camera right now. we are having a ball exploring all of the nooks and crannies of the century house. i am still in awe of this camera, and i love chasing the light around the house and hood.under.
I like looking at the world with new eyes, as though the lens of the camera were attached to my head. ... which brings me to the whole television-watching thing. You know I love nova, right? In my opinion, the only shows really worth watching are on pbs-- nova, nature, rick steves, austin city limits--but that is sort of beside the point. Tuesday night, I had a chance to sit down with my sketch book while watching nova. Holy awesome. The show was about the trip to one of Saturn's moons, Titan, by two spacecraft named Cassini & Huygens. Goodness sakes was it enchanting. I created a series of sketches based on the trip that are really still in the R&D phase, but I'll share a tid-bit or two with you now with the promise of more to come. I love space.
This drawing is called Huygens. I drew it in pencil and colored it digitally. (This is a new experiment for me, what do you think?)
Huygens was the spacecraft that launched from his mothership Cassini and actually landed (with a thud) on Titan's surface and recorded live while Cassini (who was meanwhile orbiting Saturn) transmitted the footage back to earth. Cassini stayed in orbit long after Huygens' light dimmed, sending back amazing footage of Saturn's rings and Jupiter. I'm mesmerized.
On a side note, the name Cassini reminds me of the phish song Carini, which has nothing to do with space (necessarily), but I thought you might like to know how my brain works through these things.

om. is where i want to be.

I have become a bit obsessed with documenting all of the things about our home that I love. (Perhaps this is apropos of the online course I'm taking.) And there are so many things I love about our centenarian of a house. Most of them, of course, are memories associated less with the physical space and more with the times we have shared in it. There are, however, a LOT of juicy, tangible aspects of our house that I love. For example, I love our collections of crystals, shells and crazy natural specimens.
And I love the curve of this Eva Zeisel sauce boat that sits atop the Mongolian Chest of awesomeness.
And. the. light. The light in this house is truly a thing of beauty.
And the prints and patterns that the wind makes on steamed-up windows.
Those are just the beginning. Trust me.

In other news, check out how this little lion is progressing. Do you even recognize her?

Later, kiddos.
